Development of a New Language Learning Motivation Scale for Medical Students

This study aims to develop a scale determining the extrinsic, integrative, and intrinsic factors that motivate medical students learning English as foreign language in an ESP context. Derived from Gardner Lambert’s socio-educational model (1972) Deci Ryan’s self-determination theory (1985), is based on motivational framework of Noels et al. (2000) which categorizes three main motives intrinsic, instrumental integrative. With participation 320 students, 14-item was developed with satisfactory internal consistency. Four different methods were used create motivation scale. First, focus group interview conducted randomly selected 22 items determined result content analysis sent five doctors for their opinions, 6 removed pool upon feedback. Next, literature reviewed comparisons made between existing scales. Finally, opinions 3 Specific Purposes (ESP) experts field, concept extrinsic instead motivation, 16-item five-point Likert type decided. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) Confirmatory (CFA) statistical procedures also utilized. Principal Components (PCA) applied reveal construct validity scale, Direct Oblimin Kaiser Normalization method rotation method. In order calculate adequacy sample, Kaiser-Mayer-Olkin (KMO) coefficient calculated. Bartlett sphericity tests detect correlations items, it norm values provided all processes 3-factor structure explaining 64.62% total variance. this presents new data collection tool statistically valid reliable measure students’ factors.
